Quantitative Biology – Edexcel GCSE (1BI0): Higher Tier
In this course, Dr Matt Ivory (Cardiff University) coverts quantitative biology including topics 1.4, 1.5 & 2.7 in the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology (9-1) Higher Specification. We begin (i) by understanding number, size and scale in biology, as well as highlighting some important SI Units (Topics 1.4, 1.5); We move on from this (ii) to discuss percentile charts. We discuss what they are, how they compile huge amounts of data and crucially how to interpret them (Topic 2.7).
SI Units – 1.5
In this first mini-lecture, we take a look at scale in biology as well as SI Units. We begin by highlighting some of the main SI units that are commonly used in biology. We then look at the scale involved when we study biology, ranging from from the level of entire organisms all the way down to the atomic level. We finish up by looking at some more unusual SI units such as litres and Degrees Celsius.
