About the lecture

In this module, we look at the theory of tort law, and focus in particular on (i) liability in tort law (ii) general principles of liability to pay compensation (ii) the efficiency account (iii) the wrongdoing account (iv) the nature of ‘wrong’ in the context of general features of tort law (v) fault-based and strict liability wrongs.

About the lecturer

Professor Sandy Steel is a Professor of Law and Philosophy of Law in the Faculty of Law at Oxford and Lee Shau Kee's Sir Man Kam Lo Fellow in Law at Wadham College. He is Visiting Professor at Notre Dame Law School (London). He has held visiting appointments at the University of Hong Kong, the National University of Singapore, the University of Münster, and New York University. His research interests are in philosophical and doctrinal questions about private law, and has published widely on torts. His recent publications include Proof of Causation in Tort Law (2017), and Great Debates in Jurisprudence (2014). His forthcoming book on Liability for Omissions is due to be published in 2023.
