Britain – The Reign of Henry VI, 1422-61
In this course, Dr James Ross (University of Winchester) explores the reign of Henry VI of England (1422-61). We begin by thinking about Henry's birth, his upbringing, and the legacy he inherited from his illustrious father, Henry V. After that, we turn to what Henry was like as a man – and as a king – focusing in particular on his personality and his piety. In the third module, we outline the series of events that led to the loss of almost all English territory in France and the end of the Hundred Years' War, before moving on in the fourth module to explore the problems of factionalism during Henry's reign and the rise of Henry's main opponent in this period: Richard, Duke of York. In the fifth module, we provide an overview of the English nobility and their motivations in this period before moving on in the sixth and final module to explore events from Henry's mental collapse in 1453 to the outbreak of the Wars of the Roses proper in 1459.
Henry's Inheritance
In this module, we think about Henry's birth, his upbringing, and the legacy – and problems – he inherited from his father, Henry V.
My name is James Ross, I'm a lecturer at the University
00:00:02of Winchester.
00:00:05And I'm here today to talk about the reign of Henry VI.
00:00:06The first lecture, we'll look at Henry's birth
00:00:12and his upbringing and the legacy
00:00:15he inherited from his father, Henry V.
00:00:17Henry was born in December 1421.
00:00:20He was the only child of his father,
00:00:23King Henry V of England, and his mother, Catherine,
00:00:25daughter of the King of France.
00:00:28His father died just nine months after his birth,
00:00:32and he, therefore, as a baby, became King of England,
00:00:36and also heir to the throne of France
00:00:41in the eyes of Englishmen, and indeed many Frenchmen.
00:00:44Few kings have been as respected as Henry V during his lifetime.
00:00:49He was a great warrior, he'd won great battles,
00:00:53and he was, therefore, an intimidating role
00:00:55model for Henry to look up to.
00:00:58But the practical, political, military,
00:01:01and economic situation that Henry VI inherited as a baby
00:01:06was actually rather more problematic.
00:01:11Firstly, Henry V left England in a state of war.
00:01:15He had put forward a claim to the French throne,
00:01:20he'd invaded France in 1415, and he'd been very successful.
00:01:22He had a legitimate claim to the throne of France.
00:01:2875 years earlier, Edward III had put forward this claim
00:01:31first with some justification.
00:01:34He was the grandson of the King of France, Philip of Valois.
00:01:38His opponent was only a cousin of that same King.
00:01:40And Henry V had used this claim.
00:01:44England's possessions on the eve of Henry V's invasion
00:01:49comprised Gascony, which is a large area of Southwestern
00:01:54France, and the small but strategically important town
00:01:57of Calais on the North coast, opposite Dover.
00:02:01Henry V, of course, had won a huge victory at Agincourt
00:02:06in 1415.
00:02:10And when he reinvaded France in 1417,
00:02:12the French refused to meet him in battle.
00:02:15So he was able to conquer Normandy, an important and rich
00:02:18area on the North coast of France between 1417 and 1420.
00:02:21He also agreed, in 1420 and 1421,
00:02:29a treaty called the Treaty of Tour,
00:02:34whereby he became heir to the throne of France
00:02:36after the current incumbent Charles VI of France had died.
00:02:41As it happens, Henry V predeceased Charles VI.
00:02:45But Henry VI, therefore, inherited this claim
00:02:49to the throne of France.
00:02:53However, effectively Henry V had committed England
00:02:57to a long term war to realize this claim to the throne.
00:03:01Although Henry the V had been quite successful
00:03:06and had made an important alliance
00:03:08with the Duke of Burgundy, who ruled Burgundy
00:03:10in the Southeast of France, but also
00:03:14what are now Holland and Belgium, so a powerful ally--
00:03:15and between them, they controlled quite a lot
00:03:21of Northern France, including Paris.
00:03:24Much of Central and Southern France was still hostile.
00:03:28The new King, Charles VII of France,
00:03:33was obviously resistant to these English claims.
00:03:37And it was always going to take a major effort
00:03:39to try and realize Henry's claim to be King of all France.
00:03:44So a long term war.
00:03:51The English continued to be quite
00:03:52successful for a few years after Henry V's death.
00:03:54Henry V's brother, John, Duke of Bedford,
00:03:57won important victories at Cravant in 1423,
00:04:00at Verneuil in 1424.
00:04:03And the English continued to advance
00:04:05until checked by a defeat in 1429, when the French were
00:04:07inspired by Joan of Arc.
00:04:12Nonetheless, Henry VI was crowned
00:04:15aged nine in France in 1430 in an effort
00:04:18to continue that English momentum.
00:04:21But it didn't really work, and the tide of war
00:04:24had really shifted very much in to the French favor.
00:04:27The English were really on the defensive.
00:04:32And there was a sense of war weariness,
00:04:35that perhaps the war couldn't be won.
00:04:37And the English were tired of a lot of military effort.
00:04:40There were also economic problems that Henry inherited,
00:04:49Henry VI inherited.
00:04:53There was a major European recession in the 1430s
00:04:56and the 1440s, trade slumps.
00:05:00There's not enough coin to go around.
00:05:02People can't lend money to the crown,
00:05:04and the crown needed to borrow money
00:05:07because its tax revenues from customs,
00:05:08all the taxes on imports and exports into the country,
00:05:11were falling rapidly, and they were
00:05:15the biggest single contributor to the English treasury.
00:05:17So the crown's running very short of money
00:05:20by the mid 1430s.
00:05:23There were also perhaps less pressing but also
00:05:27political problems for Henry VI to deal with in England
00:05:30when he became an adult. His title to the throne
00:05:35was not really one of them.
00:05:39Although his grandfather, Henry IV had usurped
00:05:42the throne in 1399, and arguably was not perhaps
00:05:44the most rightful person to sit on the throne,
00:05:50perhaps didn't have the strongest claim,
00:05:51although it was a strong claim, the medieval belief
00:05:53that victory in battle was God's judgment,
00:05:56that god directly helped the rightful side
00:05:59to win the battle.
00:06:03Henry V's great victory at Agincourt
00:06:05was seen by almost everybody as God's judgment
00:06:07that he was the legitimate King of England.
00:06:09Therefore, despite the fact that Henry is only nine months old
00:06:13when his father dies, there's no suggestion
00:06:16that anyone else should take the throne.
00:06:19Henry is the rightful King in almost everybody's eyes.
00:06:21So his title to the throne is not a problem,
00:06:26but there are political groupings
00:06:28and factional groupings in England
00:06:30that he had to deal with as he came of age.
00:06:34And they were really centered around two figures.
00:06:37One was Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester,
00:06:39Henry V's youngest brother, and Cardinal Beaufort,
00:06:41who was Henry VI's great uncle, who
00:06:45was enormously wealthy partly through being
00:06:48bishop of Winchester, one of the richest bishoprics in Europe.
00:06:52So he had a lot of power because he had a lot of money.
00:06:56Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, lot of power
00:06:58because he was of royal blood.
00:07:00And the two were also split on how
00:07:03to deal with the French war.
00:07:05Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, wanted
00:07:09to prosecute the war until the French were beaten.
00:07:10Any idea of giving up land or make a peace treaty
00:07:14seemed to him and some others to be a betrayal of Henry V's
00:07:17great legacy of victory.
00:07:21Cardinal Beaufort and other advisors,
00:07:23such as William de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk,
00:07:28saw peace with France as the most realistic way of hanging
00:07:32on to what they already had.
00:07:37So there are two parties, a peace party and a war party,
00:07:38if you like.
00:07:42And there is political tension between the two.
00:07:42For a lot of Henry's early life, this probably didn't really
00:07:48impinge a great deal on him.
00:07:51He's brought up in a traditional way, like most kings,
00:07:54most aristocrats are.
00:07:57He's taught reading and writing.
00:08:00He's given military exercises.
00:08:03And he's taught some of the chivalric ideals
00:08:06of good manners and courtesy that
00:08:09were very standard at the time.
00:08:13Henry's intelligent.
00:08:16We know he can read in--
00:08:18he can read Latin.
00:08:22We know he speaks English and French.
00:08:23There's evidence later of quite a lot of book learning.
00:08:25So he's brought up in a traditional way.
00:08:30He's crowned King of England, 1429.
00:08:33He's crowned King of France in 1430.
00:08:36But this doesn't mean he's really actively involved
00:08:39in ruling.
00:08:42That comes in 1435 when his eldest uncle,
00:08:44John, Duke of Bedford, dies.
00:08:47And Henry really is to some extent
00:08:49forced to step up and begin to rule
00:08:52as an adult, which you can begin to see from 1436,
00:08:55when he's 15-16.
00:08:58So to conclude, Henry V's legacy is
00:09:02quite impressive in terms of English reputation,
00:09:06of territory that he's conquered.
00:09:10But there were a lot of practical problems
00:09:12that Henry VI inherits.
00:09:15And it's a big ask for Henry to deal
00:09:21with all of these problems-- the war with France,
00:09:25economic slump, and political tension in England.
