Britain – Civil Wars, 1639-51

In this course, Professor John Morrill (University of Cambridge) thinks about the British Civil Wars, the intertwined series of conflicts that ravaged England, Ireland and Scotland in the mid-17th century. In the first two modules, we think about the civil wars in England, Ireland and Scotland—first as independent, and then as interdependent phenomena. After that, we look in turn at Scotland, Ireland and England and the nature of the socio-political changes in each of these territories, before turning in the final module to the longer-term legacies of the British Civil Wars.

Civil War in Three Kingdoms

In this module, we consider the civil wars taking place in England, Ireland and Scotland as separate phenomena.
