Tense in Creative Writing

In this course, Professor Lars Iyer (University of Newcastle) explores the use of tense in creative writing. In the first module we introduce tense, and look at the past simple tense. In the second module, we consider another past tense: past perfect. In the third module we examine the past progressive tense, before turning to the past perfect continuous I n the fourth module. In the fifth module, we look at the present tense. In the sixth module we think about flashbacks, and finally discuss some tips for writing flashbacks in the seventh module.

Past Simple

In this module, we introduce past tense, and look at past simple tense, focusing in particular on (i) importance of tense (ii) past tense in storytelling (iii) past tense in literature (iv) advantages of past tense (v) technical aspects of past tense (vi) past tense and the present of the story.
