Social Influence – Applying Social Psychology Research
In this course, Dr Ayoub Bouguettaya (University of Birmingham) explores the applications of social psychology research to the real world, with a focus on combatting negative behaviour. In the first lecture, we think about the ethics, obedience and heroism present in an imagined field study. In the second lecture, we think about the ethical considerations which need to be made when undertaking social psychology research. In the third lecture, we think about the ‘right’ way to conduct social psychology research, specifying statistics and tools, context, and associated factors. Next, we think about heroism and what it means to perform heroic behaviour. In the fifth and final lecture, we think about Peter Badger’s actions during the COVID-19 pandemic in reference to the definitions of heroism that have been discussed.
Ethics, Obedience and Heroism
In this lecture, we think about the concepts of ethics, obedience and heroism, focusing in particular on: (i) defining a theory as a collection of knowledge based on a combined series of research; (ii) presenting an example study as a case from which to evaluate the ethics of research; (iii) a review of different ethical considerations from this imagined field study; (iv) framing these considerations in the context of ethics, obedience and heroism; (v) definitions of prejudice, obedience and ethics; (vi) the utilitarian perspective on morality as compared to the given definition of ethics.
Hello.
00:00:06My name is Doctor in Bogota and I am the
00:00:07assistant professor of social psychology at the University of Birmingham.
00:00:10Today I'm going to be talking to you about the
00:00:13ideas of contemporary applications and investigations of social psychology,
00:00:15mostly focusing on bad behaviour.
00:00:20So prejudice, behaviour that could be bad, like obedience and the flip side.
00:00:23Good behaviour, heroism.
00:00:27What we're going to do in this course is what we're going to.
00:00:29We're going to talk about how hard it is to actually even research these topics.
00:00:31We're going to move on to a discussion
00:00:36about how current research differs from older research,
00:00:37both ethically and practically.
00:00:40We're going to discuss classic studies and recent studies on being a hero.
00:00:42And then we're going to discuss how we can use
00:00:47our understanding of social psychology to understand pro social activity,
00:00:49focusing on theories of pro social behaviour and, using our knowledge,
00:00:52investigate a big recent event in the past few years using theories.
00:00:56Understand it.
00:01:01Remember,
00:01:01a theory is a collection of of knowledge that
00:01:02is based on a series of research together.
00:01:05So we say the theory of gravity.
00:01:08In this context, it's not just a hypothesis It's a theory.
00:01:10So to start, though, what I'm gonna do is I'm going to describe a scenario.
00:01:14I want you to put yourself in the shoes of this person.
00:01:18You are walking down the street,
00:01:22you turn a corner and you see a group of people wearing racist insignia,
00:01:26apparently beating a child of a different race.
00:01:32Before you can react.
00:01:36Though, a person runs in,
00:01:37grabs the child and just ran and just takes off to protect them.
00:01:39Clearly, they don't know them. They clearly have no relation.
00:01:42They see it, they grab them and they run. You're horrified. Of course.
00:01:45You pull out your phone, you dial 999.
00:01:49And before you press call Wow, a bunch of cameras come out.
00:01:52Lab assistants walk out and lab suits and they're clapping.
00:01:58And the person who grabbed the child is confused.
00:02:02Wait, What's happening? Am I getting pranked? Congratulations.
00:02:05You've done a wonderful job.
00:02:09This was a test by Columbia University in the US, uh,
00:02:11to see how people could be heroes in the contemporary event.
00:02:15We were replicating a previous study.
00:02:19Okay, fine. You You feel a lot better. Cool.
00:02:22You go home, you start thinking wait a second.
00:02:25That was
00:02:31unethical. Maybe
00:02:33that study must have been traumatising
00:02:35for everyone. For myself. I'm I'm feeling really traumatised.
00:02:37Like I saw something that was horrific. I saw a racist attack on a child.
00:02:41You're shaken. And what about the guy who who saved this child?
00:02:47What about the guy who went in, grabbed this child and ran
00:02:51Did How do they feel?
00:02:54And this child may be an actor. But how does that work?
00:02:56And you think about the lab assistance.
00:03:01They must have known it was wrong, but they were obeying the rules.
00:03:03They were listening. They must have known this.
00:03:08They if they're psychologists, they must have known that something wasn't right.
00:03:10But they obeyed someone. They obeyed someone to do this study
00:03:14that clearly could have been who could have gone really badly.
00:03:19It could have been that person.
00:03:23Let's say, for example, that person, instead of grabbing the child and running,
00:03:24they could have pulled a knife and started stabbing those people.
00:03:28They must have known it was wrong. They obeyed a very, very negative thing.
00:03:32And then you think about the look of determination,
00:03:38that hero that person they chose to help.
00:03:42It's a mob of people wearing racist insignia. They had great personal risk
00:03:46and they couldn't have known they would have gotten away, but they did it anyway.
00:03:54So you have in summary ethics. You have obedience and you have heroism.
00:03:59And these are all tied to social psychology and how we do research.
00:04:06By the end of this course, you'll have a framework to understand these concepts.
00:04:10These questions.
00:04:16We won't be focusing too much on the ideas of prejudice and obedience,
00:04:17but rather we will be focusing more on contemporary research,
00:04:20conducting research and our ideas around these.
00:04:23But first, before we do that, we have to talk about ethics.
00:04:26We talk about how we get our information,
00:04:29how and when we apply it and move on to a discussion of heroism and heroism research.
00:04:31Let's, however, make sure
00:04:37that we're on the same page, and this is a key definition.
00:04:39So we are talking about the right things in the right way.
00:04:43Prejudice
00:04:47is a deep dislike of another person
00:04:48based on their group membership, and is comprised of a feeling
00:04:51a negative generalisation, also known as a stereotype,
00:04:55and they're an intent to act against this
00:04:59obedience is where an individual
00:05:02follows the orders or request of another because they happen
00:05:05to have authority or some form of standing over others.
00:05:09And ethics is basically a system of understanding what is right and what is wrong,
00:05:14what is actually good and what is not.
00:05:20And this I know it's sort of more related to morality,
00:05:23but basically it's about it has a utilitarian perspective, that is,
00:05:26Are we doing the most good against a
00:05:30negative situation or potentially just a neutral situation?
00:05:32This is where our course is going to explore.
00:05:36We're going to talk about ethics next, but we're also going to talk about heroism.
00:05:40We're going to talk about prejudice a little bit.
00:05:43We're going to talk about obedience.
00:05:45This stuff is all intertwined,
00:05:46interconnected and against the applications of social psychology.
00:05:48With that, we're going to move on to ethics to start
00:05:53
