Setting in Creative Writing

In this course, Professor Lars Iyer (University of Newcastle) explores the use of setting in creative writing. In the first module, we introduce setting and time markers. In the second module, we look at the use of time in literature. In the third module, we examine place, before turning to pathetic fallacy in the fourth module. In the fifth and final module, we discuss choosing a time and place in which to set your story.

Time Markers

In this module, we look at setting and time markers, focusing in particular on (i) understanding setting (ii) conveying time (iii) pacing and time (iv) character perception of time (v) historical and symbolic time (vi) temporal structure.
