Ratio, Proportion, and Rates of Change III – OCR GCSE (J560): Higher Tier

In this course, Dr Thomas Woolley (Cardiff University) continues exploring how to relate numbers, specifically using percentages, ratios in shapes, and direct and inverse proportion, while covering Topics 2.03a, 2.03b, 2.03c, 5.02a, 5.02b, 5.03a, 9.04b, 9.04c, and 10.05b in the OCR GCSE (9-1) Mathematics (J560) Specification for Higher Tier. In the first mini-lecture, learn about percentages and how to convert a percentage to a fraction or a decimal (Topics 2.03a, 2.03b). In the second mini-lecture, we work with percentage changes and percentages that are greater than 100% (Topic 2.03c). In the third mini-lecture, we work with percentages in financial contexts (Topic 5.03a). In the fourth mini-lecture, we use ratios to relate similar shapes (Topics 9.04b, 9.04c). In the fifth mini-lecture, we use similarity and ratios to understand and compare right triangles (Topic 10.05b). In the sixth mini-lecture, we introduce direct proportionality (Topic 5.02a) and in the seventh mini-lecture we introduce inverse proportionality (Topic 5.02b). In the eighth mini-lecture, we extend our understand of proportionality to formulate equations involving more complicated quantities in direct and inverse proportion (Topics 5.02a, 5.02b).

Percentage Conversions and Calculations – 2.03a, 2.03b

In this mini-lecture, we introduce Topics 2.03a and 2.03b by thinking about percentages, focusing in particular on: (i) how to convert a percentage to a fraction or a decimal along with examples; and (ii) how to use percentages to compare fractions with different denominators.
