Ratio, Proportion, and Rates of Change I – OCR GCSE (J560)

In this course, Dr Thomas Woolley (Cardiff University) explores units, ratios, and fractions, covering Topics 10.01a, 10.01b, 10.01c, and 2.01c in the OCR GCSE (9-1) Mathematics (J560) Specification for Foundation and Higher Tier. In the first mini-lecture, we introduce units and unit conversions, specifically those involving lengths (Topic 10.01a). In the second mini-lecture, we learn how to make unit conversions for areas and volumes (Topic 10.01a). In the third mini-lecture, we learn how to make unit conversions for mass and time (Topic 10.01a). In the fourth mini-lecture, we introduce compound units and compound unit conversions, specifically those for speed and density (Topic 10.01b). In the fifth mini-lecture, we explore compound unit conversion for pressure (Topic 10.01b). In the sixth mini-lecture, we discuss compound unit conversions involving unit prices and rates of pay (Topic 10.01b). In the seventh mini-lecture, we learn how to use scale factors in diagrams and maps (Topic 10.01c). In the eight mini-lecture, we work with quantities expressed as fractions (Topic 2.01c).

Units of Measurement I – 10.01a

In this mini-lecture, we begin our discussion of Topic 10.01a by introducing units and unit conversions, specifically those involving lengths. As we move through this mini-lecture, we consider: (i) the metric system of units (metres, grams, litres, seconds, etc.) and the imperial system of units (inches, miles, pounds, gallons, etc.); and (ii) examples that illustrate how to use conversion factors to convert between metric and imperial units of length.
