Britain – Exploring Ethnicity

In this course, Dr Onyeka Nubia (University of Nottingham) explores the inclusion of ethnicity and diversity in British history. In the first lecture, we think about the nature of the academy and its effect on history. In the second lecture, we think about the importance and content of British history. In the third lecture, we think about English history from 1485 to the 1660s. Next, we think about the presentation of ethnic diversity in the works of William Shakespeare. In the fifth lecture, we think about British history from the 1660s to 1900. In the sixth and final lecture, we think about the presentation of ethnic diversity in British history through period film and TV.

Who are the academy?

In this lecture, we think about the nature of the academy, focusing in particular on: (i) the influence of the academy on reading lists, materials included in lessons and even teaching styles; (ii) understanding the academy to be made up of academic minds working in each respective subject, the consumers of information and critics of informative material, as well as the institutions and journals teaching and presenting the material; (iii) questions around representation and discrimination within the academy; (iv) the imbalance in influence on the academy that Russel Group universities have; (v) the slowness of the academy to incorporate increased diversity in historical presentation in its teaching; (vi) understanding historiography as the methods of studying and writing about history; (vii) the gatekeeping role that can be best played by a representative academy; (viii) a discussion around the role played by criteria in attempting to achieve objectivity in marking.
