British Empire — Elizabethan Raiding Voyages

In this course, we examine the rise of Elizabethan privateering and its effects on both England and Spain, focusing on: (i) the development of English privateering, including legal distinctions and Elizabeth I’s strategic use of letters of reprisal; (ii) the shift from smuggling to raiding, driven by economic and political factors, and key events like the Battle of Veracruz; (iii) the motivations behind English raids, including the lure of Spanish wealth and religious conflicts; (iv) the practicalities of plundering voyages, including ship organisation, crew life, and challenges at sea; (v) Francis Drake’s career, from early voyages to his legendary status after his circumnavigation; (vi) the consequences of plundering, impacting Spanish defences and contributing to England’s economy.

The Term "Privateer" in Elizabethan England

In this Lecture, we explore the historical context and development of Elizabethan privateering in the sixteenth century, focusing on: (i) the legal and political distinctions between piracy and privateering, including the anachronistic use of the term "privateer" and the historical use of "private man of war"; (ii) the systems of maritime plunder, such as letters of reprisal, evolving from medieval practices and shaped by the era's legal traditions; (iii) the impact of religious conflicts in Europe, including the French Wars of Religion and the Dutch Revolt, on the expansion and complexity of privateering laws; (iv) Elizabeth I's strategic issuance of letters of reprisal to enable covert attacks on Spanish shipping, avoiding the formal declaration of war; (v) the increasing regulation of privateering under Elizabeth’s reign, introducing stricter requirements for legal authorisation and the prosecution of unauthorised maritime attacks.
