Supply and Demand: The Energy Transition

The Global Energy System

In this course, Dr Jonathan Clarke (University of Warwick) explores issues in the contemporary global energy system. In the first module, we think about the ongoing transition to renewable energy sources and shifts in the supply and demand dynamics of the global energy market. In the second, we look at the relationship between energy production and climate change, and the strategies states are employing to reduce carbon emissions. The third module outlines three core issues in the global energy system known collectively as the “energy trilemma” – security, equity, and sustainability. In the fourth module, we conclude by considering some obstacles to the renewable energy transition, such as its high upfront costs and the immediate need for increased energy access in the developing world.

Supply and Demand: The Energy Transition

In this module, we think about the ongoing transition towards renewable energy sources and shifts in the supply and demand dynamics of the global energy market. We focus on: (i) where the present transition fits into previous historic transformations of the energy system; (ii) how the renewable transition’s emphasis on environmental concerns distinguishes it from those in the past; (iii) shifts in global demand, particularly the rapid growth in energy consumption in developing economies such as China; (iv) the key drivers of this growing demand, such as population growth and socioeconomic development; (v) the present global energy supply mix.
