The Film Industry

In this course, Professor Keith Johnston (UEA) discusses the film industry. In the first module, we introduce the topic by looking at the key issues and debates that surround the film industry. After this, we explore the history of the Hollywood studio system and its development. Then we look at how British film studios developed. In the next module, we focus on the film industry and the idea of genre. Then, we explore film marketing, promotion and trailers. Finally, we look at the modern film industry and the growth of the blockbuster.

Introduction

In this module, we introduce the topic by looking at the key issues and debates that surround the film industry. In particular, we will focus on: (i) why is the Film Industry still important?; (ii) the current landscape, including a discussion of Netflix, Amazon, and the relationship of these new studios to past brands; (iii) industry composition, including a discussion of production, distribution, and exhibition of films; (iv) the US and UK as case studies; and (v) how the modern industry has emerged from the history of the film industry in America and beyond.
