Statistics II – AQA GCSE (8300): Higher Tier

In this course, Dr Craig Anderson (University of Glasgow) explores statistics, covering Topics S4 and S6 in the AQA GCSE (9-1) in Mathematics (8300) Specification for Higher Tier. In the first mini-lecture, we introduce three types of averages (mean, median, and mode) before discussing range and outliers (Topic S4). In the second mini-lecture, we learn about quartiles, including the lower and upper quartiles (Topic S4). In the third mini-lecture, we show how to use frequency table to determine averages (Topic S4). In the fourth mini-lecture, we work with box plots, which are also known as box-and-whisker plots (Topic S4). In the fifth mini-lecture, we learn about bivariate data, scatter plots, and correlation (Topics S6). In the sixth mini-lecture, we learn how to make predictions and discuss interpolation and extrapolation (Topic S6). In the seventh mini-lecture, we go through an example that illustrates the importance of taking a large enough sample size (Enrichment). In the eighth mini-lecture, we discuss how to draw a line of best mathematically and go through five bad graphs that represent data poorly (Enrichment).

Averages and Outliers – S4

In this mini-lecture, we introduce Topic S4 by learning about three types of averages (mean, median, and mode) before discussing range and outliers. As we move through this mini-lecture, we consider: (i) what an average is, three types of common averages known as the mean, median, and mode, and examples of each; (ii) how to compute the mean, median, and mode give a data set; (iii) the pros and cons of using the mean, median, or mode as way of averaging data; (iv) the range to describe the spread of the data; and (v) outliers due to extreme values and data errors.
