About the Course
This course, by Dr Jamie Barker (Loughborough University), explores self-efficacy in the context of sport and exercise performance. In the first module, we think about how self-efficacy and self-confidence are defined and differentiated. In the second module, we think about Bandura’s four sources of self-efficacy: past success, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and emotional state. In the third module, we think about some of the key benefits of a high level of self-efficacy on sporting performance. Next, we think about some techniques for developing self-efficacy, including imagery and hypnosis. In the fifth and final module, we think about how self-efficacy and arrogance can be differentiated.
About the Lecturer
Dr Jamie Barker is a senior lecturer in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. Dr Barker’s research interests include intervention effectiveness, group dynamics, leadership and resilience within applied sport and performance research. Dr Barker’s recent publications include Psychological Support for Sport Coaches: An Exploration of Practitioner Psychologist Perspectives (2018) and Investigating the effects of irrational and rational self-statements on motor-skill and hazard-perception performance (2018).
