Solving Inequalities – Edexcel GCSE (1MA1): Foundation Tier
In this course, Professor Keith Ball (University of Warwick) explores how to solve inequalities, covering Topic A22 in the Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Mathematics Specification for Foundation Tier. In the first mini-lecture, we introduce inequalities, which are used to describe the ordering of numbers. In the second mini-lecture, we learn how to solve linear inequalities in one variable, including how to solve pairs of inequalities. In the third and fourth mini-lectures, we show how to solve a multi-step problem from Paper 1 of the 2019 Edexcel GCSE Mathematics exam using two approaches both involving ratios and solving-equations techniques.
Introduction to Inequalities – A22
In this mini-lecture, we introduce tropic A22 by exploring inequalities, which are used to describe the ordering of numbers. As we move through this mini-lecture, we think about: (i) using the inequality symbols <, >, ≤, and ≥ to describe the ordering of numbers; (ii) how to represent inequalities on a number line using an arrow with a solid or hollow circle at one end; and (iii) how to represent double inequalities on a number line using a line with solid or hollow circles at each end.
