Practical Chemistry Experiments - Edexcel GCSE (1CH0)
In this course, Dr Nick Chatterton (Birkbeck College, University of London) demonstrates core practicals necessary for the Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Chemistry (1CH0) for Higher/Foundation Tier. We begin by: (i) performing a titration to determine the concentration of an unknown hydrochloric acid solution using a known concentration of sodium hydroxide (Topic 5.9C); then (ii) show the preparation of copper sulfate salt through a neutralisation reaction between copper oxide and sulfuric acid, followed by crystallisation (Topic 3.17); before finally (iii) demonstrating the process of distillation to separate a dye-water mixture (Topic 2.11).
Titrations - 5.9C
In the first mini-lecture, we demonstrate a titration experiment used to determine the concentration of an unknown hydrochloric acid solution (Topic 5.9C). The experiment is set up using a burette filled with a known concentration of sodium hydroxide solution and a volumetric pipette to measure 25 mL of the hydrochloric acid solution with unknown concentration. We begin by demonstrating a rough titration, before performing a more accurate one. The goal is to achieve two concordant values, meaning they are within 0.1 cm3 of each other. The data from the accurate titration is used to calculate the concentration of the unknown hydrochloric acid solution using the balanced chemical equation and stoichiometry.
