Plant Health and Disease – Edexcel GCSE (1BI0): Higher Tier

In this course, Dr Matt Ivory (Cardiff University) introduces us to plant health and disease, covering topics 5.5c, 5.6c and 5.9B, 5.10B in the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology (9-1) Specification for Higher Tier. We begin by (i) discussing what communicable diseases are and how they can also exist in plants just as they can in humans and other animals. We then go through a classic example of a communicable disease in plants, Chalara ash dieback. We discuss this disease as a common infection in plants ... (Topic 5.5c) then discuss how the disease is spread and how we can potentially reduce and or prevent this spread (Topic 5.6c). We discuss how plant protect and defend themselves from these diseases with the use of both physical barriers (Topic 5.9B) and chemical defences (Topic 5.10B). We finish up with (ii) a mini-lecture discussing how plant diseases are detected and identified and then how their spread is analysed.
