Meaning in Language

In this course Dr Julia Kolkmann (University of York) explores meaning in language. In the first module, we examine meaning in language. In the second module, we look at some core concepts in pragmatics. In the third module, we explore Gricean pragmatics. In the fourth module we discuss relevance theory. In the fifth module, we consider practical implications of pragmatics theory.

Meaning in Language

In this module, we introduce meaning in language, focusing in particular on (i) understandable meaning (ii) stable vs. contextual meaning (iii) challenges in studying meaning (iv) semantics and pragmatics (v) communication in context.
