Human Health and Disease – Edexcel GCSE (1SC0): Combined Science

In this course, Dr Matt Ivory (Cardiff University) discusses human health and disease, covering topics 5.1-5.6 and 5.7B in the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology (9-1) for Combined Science. We begin (i) by discussing what disease is, non-communicable vs communicable diseases and what are pathogens (Topic 5.1-5.6); we then (ii) dive deeper in some examples bacterial diseases such as cholera and TB (Topic 5.6); then (iii) we do the same for protist based diseases such as malaria and Ebola (Topic 5.6); then (iv) we finish up by discussion sexually transmitted infections and how to reduce the spread of these STIs (Topic 5.8).

Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases - 5.1-5.6

In this first mini-lecture, we discuss what we mean when we say "disease" and pathogen". We break down what communicable and non-communicable diseases and discuss how multiple diseases may interact with each other. Then we finish off with a brief overview of the various types of pathogenic organisms that cause disease in human.
