Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry

In this lecture, Dr Shane Lo Fan Hin (University of Sussex) introduces the very fundamentals of organic chemistry. We begin by: (i) defining and drawing some of the most common functional groups encountered; then (ii) moving onto nomenclature, giving some examples; before (iii) discussing some different types isomerism you can encounter, including structural, cis/trans and optical isomerism; and then finally (iv) briefly looking at some reaction mechanisms you may encounter.

Naming and Classifying

In the first mini-lecture, Dr Shane Lo Fan Hin introduces organic chemistry by first discussing some of the functional groups you may encounter, including some of the simplest molecules that include these functional groups. We cover alkanes, alkenes, arenes, haloalkanes, alcohols, phenols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, acyl chlorides, amides, nitriles and amino acids.
