Fuels, Hydrocarbons and Organic Reactions - Edexcel Combined Science (1SC0)
In this course, Dr Noha Ziedan (University of Chester) covers various topics in organic chemistry for Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Combined Science (1SC0) for Higher/Foundation Tier. It begins with: (i) an introduction to organic compounds, particularly hydrocarbons, explaining their applications and categorization into aliphatic and aromatic classes (Topic 8.1); and (ii) their properties and uses (Topic 8.2-8.17).
Representing Organic Compounds - 8.1
In the first mini-lecture, we introduce the basics of organic chemistry (Topic 8.1). The lecture covers various representations of organic compounds, such as empirical, molecular, general, structural, and displayed formulas. These concepts provide a foundational understanding of organic chemistry.

00:00:08at the University of Chester.
00:00:10I'm also the programme lead for the chemistry
00:00:12programme here at the University of Chester.
00:00:15And my main speciality is organic chemistry and
00:00:17chemistry.
00:00:20I'm here going to talk to you about, um, organic chemistry content for G CS E.
00:00:21And we will focus mainly on hydrocarbons alcohols and carbolic
00:00:27acids.
00:00:32So organic compounds are compound that you can find in all organic, uh,
00:00:33in all living organisms.
00:00:38Uh, they contain mainly carbon.
00:00:40And, uh, we don't only find them in, uh, living organisms or living, uh, things.
00:00:42But we also find them,
00:00:50uh, in geological, um, and artificial by geological and artificial processes.
00:00:52So, uh, what are hydrocarbons?
00:00:57So from the name hydrocarbons means they are
00:01:00compound that contain only carbon and hydrogen.
00:01:02And they are there are a wide variety of hydrocarbons.
00:01:05Uh, some of them are street chains. Some of them are branch chains.
00:01:10There are so many and white uses of hydrocarbon.
00:01:15So the one we are all and know are being used as fuel.
00:01:19So the fuel you use in your car is actually hydrocarbons,
00:01:24and the one that we use at home.
00:01:28Also, Hydrocarbons. Um, also, you are familiar with the plastics you use.
00:01:30These are, uh, also come from hydrocarbon.
00:01:36They are polymers made from hydrocarbons.
00:01:39So what are hydrocarbons and what are the different classes of hydrocarbons?
00:01:42So before we start drawing and learning how to draw the different structures of all,
00:01:47we need to know how to represent different organic compounds.
00:01:52So the first, um, representation is the empirical formula.
00:01:56So empirical formula is basically this simplest whole number
00:02:00ratio of all the elements within a compound.
00:02:04So if you have a compound that has two carbons, four hydrogen so C two H for the emperor
00:02:07formula will be CH two,
00:02:13which represents the lowest
00:02:15ratio.
00:02:17And then there is the molecular formula,
00:02:18which is the more important one because molecular formula gives you
00:02:20exactly how many atoms of each element within your compound.
00:02:24So if the compound has two carbon four hydrogen,
00:02:28it's gonna be C two H four. This is your molecular formula,
00:02:31and then the general formula.
00:02:35The general formula is, um,
00:02:36what we use to represent a whole series of compounds for the same series.
00:02:38So, um,
00:02:44it gives you exactly the ratio between
00:02:46the different elements within in the compound.
00:02:49So if you have, uh, for example, we have for
00:02:52a
00:02:55general formula is CNH two N plus two,
00:02:56which means if you have a certain number of carbons,
00:03:00number of hydrogen will be double this number of carbons plus two.
00:03:03And then there is the structure formula structure formula is the formula when
00:03:08which shows the arrangements of the atoms within the molecule.
00:03:13So if you have a compound like 18,
00:03:18which is C
00:03:20two C
00:03:22two, that will show you how the arrangement of the different
00:03:22in the molecule
00:03:28and then the displayed formula displayed formula, the detailed formula,
00:03:29which shows you all the bonds, all the atom.
00:03:33So you have to represent all the atoms, all the bonds within your molecule.
00:03:37So these are the main types of representation of organic compounds.
