Fractions

In this series of videos, Professor Emille Lawrence (University of San Francisco) explores how to introduce and work with fractions. Her discussion includes common mistakes and misconceptions as well as tips for teaching in the classroom. In the first video, we introduce wholes, parts, and fractions. In the second video, we work with fractions on the number line. In the third video, we discuss methods for visualizing fractions to determine whether two fractions are equivalent.

How to Introduce Fractions

In this video, we introduce fractions, focusing on: (i) proper notation; (ii) using a pie or pizza diagram to represent fractions; (iii) how to divide one whole into equal parts; (iv) the numerator and denominator; and (v) questions to get your students thinking about these concepts.
