Fatal Offences Against the Person

In this course, Professor Victor Tadros (University of Warwick) explores fatal offences against the person. In the first module, we discuss causation in relation to homicide offences. In the second module, we look at the mens rea for murder. In the third module, we examine partial defences to murder before turning to gross negligence manslaughter in the fourth module. In the fifth module, we finish by looking at unlawful dangerous act manslaughter and summarise our learning on homicide offences.

Actus Reus

In this module, we look at the actus reus of homicide offences, focusing in particular on (i) a living person in the criminal law (ii) death in criminal law (iii) what it means to cause a death (iv) what happens when the chain of causation is broken by the voluntary acts of the victim (v) controversies concerning breaks in the chain of causation.
