Essay Writing Skills

In this course, Dr Sean Sutherland (University of Westminster) discusses essay writing skills that will help students succeed in their GCSE English Language exam. In the first module, we explore how to read critically and approach essay writing using an AQA past paper. In the second module, we explore ways to improve spelling and vocabulary. In the third module, we think about ways to elevate the use of punctuation. In the fourth module, we explore different types of sentence structure. In the fifth module, we focus on paragraph structure. In the sixth module, we examine a sample response to an AQA exam question.

How to Plan Your Writing

In this module, we explore how to read critically and approach essay writing. In particular, we focus on: (i) essay writing as a genre; (ii) the AQA GCSE English Language Scheme of Assessment; (iii) tips for reading critically; and (iv) examples of reading critically using texts from a past paper.
