Developing Poetry Skills

In this course, Dr Ailsa Grant Ferguson, (University of Brighton) teaches us how to read and analyse poetry. In the first module we introduce poetry. In the second module, we look at sound. In the third module, we examine imagery. In the fourth module, we explore narrative poetry, before turning to lyric poetry in the fifth module. Finally, in the sixth module, we compare and contrast two poems.

Introducing Poetry

In this lecture, we introduce poetry, focusing in particular on (i) poetry analysis and poetry we encounter in our everyday life (ii) origins of poetry, including sound and structure (iii) types of poetry (iv) Romantic and contemporary poetry (v) diversity in narrative and structural elements of poetry.
