About the lecture
In this module, we think about one of the most dramatic events in the relationship between China and Japan – the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 – focusing in particular on: (i) the speed and scale of the Japanese invasion; (ii) the immediate trigger for the invasion: the Mukden Incident; (iii) the longer-term processes that the invasion of Manchuria made manifest; and (iv) the wider international context for the invasion of the Manchuria – how did Japan get away with such a blatant land-grab?
About the lecturer
Dr Marjorie Dryburgh is Lecturer in Chinese Studies in the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield. She works on the modern history of China, with specific interests in China’s relations with Japan before 1945, regional and urban histories, and the conventions and uses of life writing.
