About the lecture

In this module, we think about one of the most dramatic events in the relationship between China and Japan – the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 – focusing in particular on: (i) the speed and scale of the Japanese invasion; (ii) the immediate trigger for the invasion: the Mukden Incident; (iii) the longer-term processes that the invasion of Manchuria made manifest; and (iv) the wider international context for the invasion of the Manchuria – how did Japan get away with such a blatant land-grab?
