About the lecture

In this module, we consider the question, ‘Did Elizabeth's reign see a new consensus politics?’, focusing in particular on: (i) the level of political consensus in the mid-Tudor period; (ii) the stability in the membership of Elizabeth’s Privy Council; (iii) the disagreements that arose between different members of the Privy, and between members of the Privy Council and Elizabeth herself; (iv) the extent to which these disagreements were contained within the Privy Council; and (v) the extent to which there was consensus in Parliament in this period.

About the lecturer

Susan Doran is Professor of Early Modern British History at the University of Oxford. She has a substantial publishing record which reflects a particular interest in the religious and political history of the Tudors, especially Elizabeth I. She is also a Senior Research Fellow at Jesus College and Director of Studies in History at Regent’s Park College.
