About the lecture

In this module, we talk about the rules of human rights law in legal terms, and how they came about, focusing in particular on (i) the context of the Second World War for the emergence and consensus on human rights by European countries (ii) the formation of the European Convention of Human Rights by the Council of Europe (iii) rights protected by the ECHR (iv) the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg (v) developments in the UK to integrate human rights into British Law culminating in the creation of the Human Rights Act 1998.

About the lecturer

Professor Conor Gearty is a Professor of Human Rights Law at LSE Law School. He has been Director of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights (2002-2009), and has published widely on terrorism, civil liberties and human rights. Professor Gearty is also a barrister, and was a founder member of Matrix chambers from where he continues to practice. His recent publications include Liberty and Security (2013) and On Fantasy Island: Britain, Europe and Human Rights (2016).
