About the lecture
In this module, we'll explore Baudrillard's idea of hyperreality. In particular, we will focus on: (i) the culture industry theory and the work of Theodor Adorno (ii) how Theodor Adorno's culture industry theory links to the work of Jean Baudrillard's work on the hyperreal; (iii) the work of Marshall McLuhan and how this links to Jean Baudrillard's work; and (iv) Jean Baudrillard's book Simulacra & Simulation, including a detailed discussion of Baudrillard's essay "The Precession of Simulacra".
About the lecturer
Dr Ross Abbinnett is Senior Lecturer in Social and Political Theory at the University of Birmingham. His recent publications include The Neoliberal Imagination: Politics, Aesthetics, and Economics in the Evolution of Hyper-Industrial Capitalism (2021), The Thought of Bernard Stiegler: Capitalism, Technology and the Politics of Spirit (2018) and Marxism After Modernity: Politics, Technology and Social Transformation (2006).
