About the lecture

In this module, we conclude our exploration of video game production cultures, focusing in particular on: (i) the 2018 Game Developers’ Conference and its panel on unionising in the games industry; (ii) the consequent development of Game Workers Unite (2018-), a UK-based union for those working in the video game sector; (iii) issues of exploitation, diversity, and labour conditions in the games industry; (iv) the relationship between how games are made and the kinds of games that are made; (v) the importance of production and distribution tools to game-making.

About the lecturer

Dr Paolo Ruffino is Senior Lecturer in Communication and Media at the University of Liverpool. His research and teaching interests focus on video games, interactive media and digital cultures. His publications include: ‘Future Gaming: Creative Interventions in Video Game Culture’ (2018). He leads a module on Games and Algorithmic Culture at Liverpool.
