About the lecture
In this module, we introduce the offence of theft, focusing in particular on (i) why parliament criminalises property offences (ii) the offence of theft in the Theft Act 1968 (iii) the scope and meaning of theft (iv) the actus reus elements of theft (v) the mens rea elements of theft (vi) ways of interpreting actus reus and mens rea.
About the lecturer
Dr Joe Purshouse is a Senior Lecturer in Criminal Law and Justice at the University of Sheffield. His research interests are criminal justice, criminal process, facial recognition technology, AI, online child abuse activism, citizen-led policing, and privacy. His recent publications include Automated facial recognition and policing: a Bridge too far? (2021), and ‘Paedophile hunters’, criminal procedure, and fundamental human rights (2020). He is a member of the Centre for Criminological Research.
