About the lecture

In this lecture, we think about probability, critical values, and significance, focusing in particular on: (i) normal distributions, described in the context of a sample of people’s heights and IQ scores, highlighting the unimodal and symmetrical structure of the distribution around the peak of results at the mean; (ii) using a normal distribution to select values or scores which lie within a particular percentage range e.g., the top 5%; (iii) linking this understanding to null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) in the context of the sleep quality study from lecture three; (iv) using a normal distribution graph to highlight the differences in approach and interpretation between one- and two-tailed tests; (v) revisiting the Sign test score of five and working through an example interpretation using a critical values table.

About the lecturer

Dr Alison Wadeley is a senior lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Bath Spa University, leading undergraduate teaching on psychological research methods and statistics. Dr Wadeley’s own research focuses on how naturally occurring sleep disruption can impact adult cognitive function, as well as ankylosing spondylitis. Dr Wadeley’s recent publications include ‘Real-world experience of secukinumab treatment for ankylosing spondylitis at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath’ (2020) and ‘Does measuring the bone mineral density of patients identified as having an osteopaenic X-ray appearance affect bone health treatment decisions? A real-world retrospective analysis’ (2019).
