About the lecture
In this module, we introduce the topic by looking at the key issues and debates that surround the film industry. In particular, we will focus on: (i) why is the Film Industry still important?; (ii) the current landscape, including a discussion of Netflix, Amazon, and the relationship of these new studios to past brands; (iii) industry composition, including a discussion of production, distribution, and exhibition of films; (iv) the US and UK as case studies; and (v) how the modern industry has emerged from the history of the film industry in America and beyond.
About the lecturer
Professor Keith Johnston is a Professor of Film and Television Studies at the University of East Anglia. He specialises in British cinema, film trailers (and other movie marketing), amateur cinema, women filmmakers, and science fiction. He has published widely, including his books Colour Films in Britain: The Eastmancolor Revolution (2021) and Ealing Revisited (2012).
