About the lecture

In this module, we introduce inchoate liability, focusing in particular on (i) the meaning of inchoate offences (ii) specific and general inchoate offences (iii) attempts (iv) why we criminalise attempts liability (v) the tension between social protection and culpability as justifications for attempts liability.

About the lecturer

Professor John Child is specialises in criminal law, doctrine and theory, and the relationship between criminal law and neuroscience. He co-authors a leading criminal law textbook: Smith, Hogan and Ormerod’s Essentials of Criminal Law, and co-directs the Criminal Law Reform Now Network. He has published widley in internal structuring of offences and defences within the general part of criminal law theory. He has also recorded a wide range of material for textbook supplementaries and other educational purposes.
