About the lecture
In this module, we introduce the key ideas about why economic growth and development are important. In particular, we will focus on: (i) the international spread of economic development; (ii) why are some parts of the world developed and some have not; and (iii) give an overview of the lecture as a whole.
About the lecturer
Ramin Nassehi is lecturer in the Department for Economics at University College London, as well as a member of the Centre for Teaching and Learning Economics (CTaLE). He specialises in economics pedagogy, particularly in the ways in which economists can better communicate their ideas to the public. As a result of this, he has presented his research at various conferences, including CTREE (AEA), Advanced HE, and the UCL Education Conference.
Hi, I'm Ramin as a a lecturer, Department of Economics at University College,
00:00:05London.
00:00:10I'm also a contributor to core Beacon Project and also a
00:00:11member of C Tail Centre for Teaching and Learning Economics.
00:00:15So let's talk about economic growth and development
00:00:19in terms of motivation. You know why this topic is important?
00:00:24Let's imagine you're an alien looking at the earth, you know, at night,
00:00:28from far away.
00:00:33What do you see?
00:00:34You see this picture?
00:00:36You know, some parts of the earth are shining while other parts are dark.
00:00:37So immediately, question jumps to your mind.
00:00:43You know,
00:00:46why is this difference why some parts are shining while other parts are not?
00:00:46And this goes back to one of the oldest questions of social sciences.
00:00:52You know, light is a proxy for material wealth of a country.
00:00:56So essentially,
00:01:01the question is that why some countries have
00:01:03become rich while others have lagged behind?
00:01:05How can we explain the big differences in
00:01:08income in standard of living across countries?
00:01:12And this is at the heart of this topic economic growth and development.
00:01:15In this series of videos,
00:01:20I'm going to talk about economic growth
00:01:21and development first I'm gonna define development,
00:01:23Then I'm going to talk about economic growth.
00:01:27What is economic growth?
00:01:30What's the relationship between economic growth and income inequality?
00:01:31Then I'm going to talk about, you know, how can we promote economic growth?
00:01:36What are the proximate causes of economic growth?
00:01:40What are the policies that can increase the growth across countries?
00:01:44And finally, I'm going to look at the deeper causes of growth,
00:01:49so proximate causes of growth policies for promoting
00:01:53growth than the deeper causes of growth.
