About the lecture
In this module, we outline the structure of a criminal defence, focusing in particular on (i) the ingredients of a criminal offence and corresponding defence pleas (ii) pleas which negate elements of an offence (iii) affirmative defences.
About the lecturer
Dr Mark Dsouza is an Associate Professor in Criminal Law at UCL. His research interests and teaching are in the theory and philosophy of criminal law. His doctoral thesis was converted into a monograph titled Rationale-Based Defences in Criminal Law, and published by Hart Publishing in May 2017. His recent publications include Rationale-Based Defences in Criminal Law (2017), and Criminal Law Theory: Introduction (2023).
