Number II – AQA GCSE (8300)
In this course, Dr Thomas Woolley (Cardiff University) works with numbers, covering Topics N4 and N5 in the AQA GCSE (9-1) Mathematics (8500) Specification. In the first mini-lecture, we introduce key terms, such as multiples, factors, highest common factor (HCF), and lowest common multiple (LCM) (Topic N4). In the second mini-lecture, we learn about prime numbers and their properties (Topic N4). In the third mini-lecture, we explore prime factorisation and how it can be used to determine the HCF and LCM of sets of numbers (Topic N4). In the fourth mini-lecture, we explore systematic listing strategies, such as the use of tables and trees (Topic N5). In the fifth mini-lecture, we learn about the product rule and combinations formula 'n choose k' for computing various types of combinations (Topic N5).
Multiples and Factors – N4
In this mini-lecture, we introduce Topic N4 with a discussion of multiples and factors. We consider: (i) examples of factors and multiples; (ii) how to determine the complete list of factors of a number; (iii) the highest common factor (HCF); and (iv) the lowest common multiple (LCM).
