Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person

In this course, Dr Joe Purshouse (University of Sheffield) explores non-fatal offences. In the first module, we look at the common assaults: technical assault and battery. In the second module, we examine s. 47 OAPA 1861: assault occasioning actual bodily harm. In the third module, we consider s. 20 OAPA 1861: inflicting grievous bodily harm or wound, before turning to s. 18 OAPA 1861: wounding with intent to cause GBH in the fourth module. In the fifth module, we detail some further non-fatal offences, and examine the role that consent plays in non-fatal offence liability.

Technical Assault and Battery

In this module, we introduce the offences of technical assault and battery, focusing in particular on (i) types of non-fatal offences (ii) technical assault and battery (iii) the actus reus of technical assault (iv) mens rea of technical assault (v) battery.
