About the lecture
In the first mini-lecture, we discuss melting point analysis. Many solids in chemistry - or indeed in your kitchen - are white and can look identical. Melting point analysis provides a safe way to determine the compound you have, since the experimental melting point you find can be compared against databases of melting points you can find in textbooks. In this lecture we are shown what a melting point apparatus looks like, as well as examples of compounds on which the method can be used.
About the lecturer
Dr. Giorgio Chianello is a fully qualified Lecturer in Chemistry (PhD, FHEA, MRSC) and outreach lead at the Chemistry department of Queen Mary University of London. His interests are focused in the area of chemistry and science dissemination. His scientific background is based on nanotechnology and drug delivery, however he is currently involved in educational research focusing on new teaching technologies and enhancement on inclusion and diversity within the scientific community.
