About the lecture
In this lecture, we think about the financing of higher education, focusing in particular on: (i) the Browne report’s (2010) conclusion, which stated that the funding for higher education was unsustainable; (ii) the increase to tuition fees in 2012, resulting from the Browne report’s conclusions; (iii) the timeline from 1998 to 2017, covering English university tuition fees; (iv) the parameters of income-contingent tuition fee loans alongside increasing tuition fees; (v) some key differences in tuition fees between Wales and England; (vi) some key differences between England and Wales regarding grants for higher education.
About the lecturer
Dr Matt Dickson is associate professor of public policy at the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath. Dr Dickson’s research interests are in the earnings returns to degrees and the role of further education in progression to higher education. Some of Dr Dickson’s recent publications include ‘Returns to education - individuals’ (2023) and ‘How much does degree choice matter?’ (2022).
